Red Sonja #3 Preview

Yes it really is as bad as it reads......

  1. The whole issue, just not Red Sonja. The art, there are some pretty pictures, but Aneke's action scenes often don't flow well, her anatomy of people using tools and weapons can be very odd at times, and Hyrkania shouldn't look like Tudor England.

The story is simply out of place in Howard's setting. It's a simplistic paean to anti-monarchism and anti-fascism which are clearly mixed together in Bennett's mind here. Neither Simone or Bennett seem to be able to accept that the setting is a bunch of absolute monarchs, petty warlords, and power mad wizards and grim violence where you are either at the handle end of a sword or the pointy end.

These are writers who don't want swords and sorcery, they want The Muppets Red Sonja. Somewhere safe from real grim and grit where girls can run around having adventures without those awful stinky boys grossing everything up.

    1. The art got worse with each passing page, as if the artist just gave up.

    2. It does seem so, and the story, yeesh. It's a rehash of the villain and motive of Simone's Swords of Sorrow. Spurned ex-boyfriend will burn down the world to possess the girl who dared reject him. Bad enough Dynamite wanted Simone to give narrative direction but did Bennett really need to just regurgitate Simone's last story?

    3. I really liked the part at the end *sarcasm* "I shall make three copies of the She Devil, dress them in the bikini as no real She Devil would wear that, mwahahaha"

    4. Between his Queen Sonja fantasy and the 3 clones at the end, it seems Bennett is telling us the bikini is just something for that evil male gaze.

Here I thought I was reading Sonja back then for being kickass. How much longer is Dynamite going to go down this path?

    1. I put it down to 'we can't say anything bad about the women's team' out of a misguided notion of support. Aneke's art has too many faults when it comes to handling weapons and tools. No one handles a spear one handed like that in the last issue. And Bennett is recycling Swords of Sorrow down to the villain and motive and now a team of women from the villain pursuing the women's team of heroes. I can't fathom no one has commented on any of that no matter how much they might like the story.
