On the American side of the pond it means 'fuck you' so Sonja is flipping someone off. The artist might be commenting on her costume, on folks who judge her by the costume, or folks who only follow her for the costume?
Well . . . I needed to draw someone holding a sign for a project involving rotating announcements. Red Sonja came first to mind. After drawing it, I figured I'd post it to my blog - but the announcements made no sense to the public at large. So, I replaced them with the first words that I imagined Red Sonja would impart on someone who was staring at her. No, not that interesting of a story - so please invent your own meanings. :)
