Jettie Monday on Red Sonja

Red Sonja by Joe Jusko

Joe Jusko...the guy has talent boy...out of all the current Fantasy artists out there...he is the guy carrying the torch. He calls these finished drawings con-sketches. He goes around the world from NY to Paris and points in between visiting with fans and doing drawings for the fans.
There is an enormous body of work behind the man as he started as an assistant to the Legendary Howard Chaykin then moved on to doing covers for Heavy Metal and on to CONAN and beyond....just visit JoeJuskoart.com and you'll see what I mean. From Vampirella to Tomb Raider to Paperback book covers to "The Hawks of outreemer" to an upcoming surprise revolving around a certain Jungle Lord. Joe's work has shined and spread across the industry like wildfire. He's not only carrying the torch andf following in the footsteps of greats like Frazetta and John Buscema but...he's created his own legacy for people to follow after him.
His technique is brilliant and he works at the speed of light. How can one artist produce so much work and deliver such beautiful paintings in the time he does? Ans: It's all talent baby...straight up talent. He put in the time and energy to be the Master he is...Rock on Joe...keep us thrilled and in suspense. Thank you for allowing me share your Sonja convention piece from your visit to Paris

This selection is from the late great Dave Hoover....the man was talented and his legacy will live on in his work. This selection is from an artist simply named BOSCO....I love the camera angle upshot going on here. Not an easy composition and not one people usually attempt. Beautiful BOSCO...thanks. This selection is from Cliff Chiang...I always liked this guys stuff. Great line work. This is from DYNAMITE artist Mel Rubi...still working hard and kicking ass. "No...Red Sonja : She Devil with a sword the blog is not neglected...it's just that everyone has all kinds of other stuff going on. The contributors of this blog run other blogs and at times have no time for new posts. But I check it every day. I am always looking and checking stats and see what posts are the most popular and so on. So...even though you may not see any activity...it is still being monitored daily.

Keith Pollard convention commission

I was browsing comic art fans for some cool Red Sonja stuff and came across this nifty Sonja con pic by Pollard. I got an especially big kick out of it becuase Keith Pollard drew one of my favorite THOR runs...the whole SWORD OF SEIGFREID saga dealie. His masterful attention to dynamics , composition and detail is mind numbing. I recently reread that entire run just to see his again. He's one of my favorite artists. Why just look at the Sonja picture seen here. Crisp lines and perfect form...along with a nifty portrait of the Savage Red head. It is the antithesis of coolness! Great drawing Keith!

Revisiting with STARFIRE!

In the newest issue of Back issue magazine by Two Morrows ( Number 54 the one with the Bruce Timm BIG BARDA cover ) There is a way cool article on the creation of the character STARFIRE. The article has interview segments with Mike Vosburg and Dave Michelinie , Elliot S. Maggin , Steve Englehart and Tom Defalco ( A one time Big Wig at Marvel Comics ) It goes on to tell us the origins and ideas for the character in that she was created to be the direct answer to Marvel comics' RED SONJA...but the guys on this book just did not want to use the same premise but wanted to add a new flare and flavor. So they created a Burrough's type John Carter kind of world for STARFIRE to have her adventures in.

Starfire's name was originally supposed to be AKANDA but they went with a more commercial catchy name instead....The costume was also a product of Mike Vosburg's inspirations in European art and cartooning. Her outfit with the off the shoulder breast bearing cut out asymmetrical design and look of both Wally Wood's Power girl and Guido Crepax's Valentina. There were also designs and characters inspired by the likes of Moebius and Maroto as well as Paul Gillon and Victor De la Fuente and others in the European world of cartoonists. I'd like to share some of the cool commissions and sketches of Mike Vosburgs provided along with the article. I have always been a big fan of Back issue magazine and Roy Thomas and sincerely recommend you go on out and pick yourself up a copy of Back issue 54...not just for the cool STARFIRE article but there are also pieces on BIG BARDA , SHE HULK , VALKYRIE , MS. MARVEL and the PHEONIX! It's thier "Liberated Ladies" issue. Pick it up , read it LOVE IT! I guarantee you will.
